Mr. Henry Patmore left his home in Britain in the nineteenth century, arriving in Brandon, Manitoba. He soon became aware of the treeless landscapes. He recognized that in this harsh climate the farmers needed shelter from the prevailing winds. He also recognized that the people in Brandon and in surrounding towns and villages needed trees for shelter and for the beautification of their streets and parks.
In 1883, over one hundred and twenty five years ago, Mr. Henry Patmore started a small tree farm. The business soon grew to include a greenhouse for the propagation of trees and shrubs and for growing bedding plants. The nursery grew in size and scope until up to one hundred workers were required in order to grow sufficient trees and shrubs to satisfy the increasing market. When Mr. Henry Patmore's son Richard took over the business, he added a florist shop and a garden seed packaging and distribution department. Mr. Richard Patmore had a special acumen for trees and shrubs of superior quality. Some of his selections with distinctive merit were the Brandon Pyramid Cedar, the Brandon Ascending Elm, the Plumosa Scotch Pine and The Patmore Ash. This special ash, which Mr. Patmore discovered in northern Alberta, has been tested at the Morden Research station and has been found to have superior qualities. It was patented and today it is being grown in many parts of Canada and the United States.
In 1971 Mr. Patmore sold the nursery to Jake and Mary Driedger, who subsequently transferred ownership to their son-in-law, Ed Krueger in 2002. With their family they continued to grow a large selection of trees, shrubs, perennials and bedding plants. During this time the trees and shrubs were mainly sold as bare root. A transition to potted trees, shrubs and perennials took place. This has extended the planting time from spring until the autumn season.
On December 15, 2006, Kent Mulholland and Ian Ross purchased Patmore Nursery Sales. The new owners warmly accept the established Mission Statement, Values and Vision already adhered to at Patmore.
